Being an 8th grade English teacher, I have read many books. Being a self-proclaimed Holocaust expert, I have studied more about it than most college professors. This book was so captivating that I read it entirely in one sitting. I was looking for a new novel for my students to read and one that would show them not just what happened to the Jews, but what lengths a few people were willing to go to, to help save the lives of the innocent. We live in a world of selfishness and complacency. My students need to know that it’s not always “all about me.” Children need to be shown that there may come a time in anyone’s life where their own safety is not as important as doing what’s right. The main character was a true heroine. She was courageous when doing the right thing, helping others survive one of the most horrific periods in modern history, the holocast. She risked her life and that of her daughter. I fully realize some might say this book is better suited to a ten year old, yet I would not let an impressionable child read a book which so glossed over and ignored the horror of the holocast; which failed to acknowledge the Jew's devastating emotional suffering while being forced into hiding, being totally displaced and forced to endure indescribable pain; and then, tieing up the entire story with ribbons and bows. Never a word about the type of man, a creature, who blindly follows orders in which he participated in unspeakable crimes, atrocities against fellow men, simp!y based on race. Who makes the holocaust seem like a small break in daily life? And characterized Nazis as good old boys, nice dinner partners who like to sing and laugh after dinner. Why does the author not tell the deeper, dark truth of the holocost? I am interested in her agenda.
